N&R Engineering + Air Force Phase II Details

N&R Engineering is proud to be continuing our partnership with the Air Force. After completing Phase I: Uncertainty Quantification of Test Derived Model Parameters for Life Prediction of Composite Bolted Joints in an ICME Framework in 2015, we are now working on Phase II; advancing the technology that was developed in Phase I.

In Phase I, our goal was to implement a Bayesian framework for uncertainty quantification of material parameters needed for life prediction of polymer matrix composite (PMC) bolted joints.

Now taking this project one step further, our objective is to develop and implement a software tool for Bayesian inference based uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods for use in composite bolted joint life predictions modeling. In particular, the focus will be on quantification of uncertainty in test derived model properties and metrics for bolted joint fatigue characterization.

The proposed tools will combine existing multi-scale modeling approaches and tools developed by the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) community and integrate this within a Bayesian probabilistic framework for uncertainty quantification. The methodology implemented in this program will provide tools for uncertainty quantification of test derived fatigue material parameters, accounting for model and experimental variations and errors.

This anticipated outcome of the proposed development effort is an analysis package that can be used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for their engineers in their bolted joint life certification efforts. N&R Engineering will be collaborating with Northrop Grumman to develop tools to support the test validation efforts they will undertake and use the data for probabilistic life prediction on at least one of their programs on record.
